DoTerra Oils pt. 1

I have recently added essentials to my “must try” list. I hear about them all the time, I was curious. A very good friend of mine swears by her oils. She uses them for EVERYTHING.
I had to jump on this train.
I already use Epsom Salt on a most daily basis. My face, my baths, my legs. The Husband will soak his feet at night (especially if he is breaking in a knew pair of work boots.) One of my AMAZING find for Epsom salt can be found here and here.

I have been having a lot of issues sleeping lately
The last couple of nights I have used the Lavender Oil from my DoTerra trail kit. I put a dab of the oil on the soles of my feet and a drop or two on my pillow. I was able to fall asleep faster! The scent of the lavender is heavenly! I think that tonight I may mix a few drops of the lavender with a carrier oil in a spritz bottle and spritz my pillow for a more even coverage of scent… just a thought.

Last night was the best nights sleep I have gotten in a very long time. Before bed I dissolved 2 cups of Epsom Salt in a VERY hot bath and added 4 drops of my lavender oil! I grabbed a book and soaked for 20-30 minutes, it was so calming, so relaxing. I got out and went to bed, I must’ve fallen asleep right away! I didnt toss and turn, I didnt wake up until the rose through my window!! I feel amazing this morning!

One last thing that I have used the lavender oil so far for is for itch relief! From bug bites.
I bought a little spritz bottle from Target for $1 (in the travel toiletries section)
I filled it about half way with Witch Hazel, dropped about 8 drops of lavender in it and a bit of water.
Shook it up and sprayed my bug bites.
Now it didnt completely make the itch go away, but enough to get my mind off of it, the lavender was soothing and the witch hazel calmed my skin.

I plan on using the lemon oil today, see what I can come up with. I know that the oils are ultra concentrated. With the lemon I am looking for health benefits! I have talked about how great lemons are for you in your water here.
I am thinking I’ll start with one drop of lemon oil per glass or water bottle! Cant wait to see the results!

I received my oils from a DoTerra Wellness Advocate, Chelsey Miller.

Best Vanilla cake and Buttercream Frosting

I have hunted and hunted for the best vanilla cake recipe that didnt taste like box cake, and that didnt call for expensive cake flour…
Vanilla is my 3 year old’s favorite cake. Thats what she wanted for her birthday. I dont do box cakes. Well box anything really, I am always trying to find recipes that I can make myself.

After *many* failed attempts, I finally have the perfect vanilla cake recipe!

This cake is moist without sticking to your pallet, with a nice crust on top. I know, I know that sounds weird right? WRONG! Its amazing!
Not too sweet, not too bland. OMG, I think I have to have a piece RIGHT NOW.

1/2 stick of butter (I use salted) Room Temp.
2c granulated sugar
1c milk (WHOLE, it has more flavor)
2tsp. Vanilla extract *
4 lg. eggs
3/4c veg. oil
2 1/2c AP flour
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
*Use PURE vanilla extract, otherwise you’ll get that yucky after taste. It can be pretty expensive. I buy the bulk size at Wal-Mart of the McCormick brand. I think its $9. But it lasts forever. And trust me, I bake A LOT.

Cream butter, sugar. Add eggs one and a time.
Add milk, vanilla and oil.
Then add your baking powder.
Slowly add in your flour.

Splash guard doesnt really help me… =[ Ha!

Grease your pan with Crisco! It works the best! And then I dust it with flour and the cake just POPS right out!!

Bake at 350 degrees…
If you want to make cupcakes the baking time is right around 20 minutes.
I use two 9″ cake pans and bake for 40 minutes

Okay so I have issues with buttercream. I LOVE it, except when I go to a bakery or restaurant.. It always is either WAAAAY too sweet or tastes like butter… Gross. But here is a buttercream that is sure to knock your socks off. It really is the bees knees! Ha!

3c. Conf. sugar
1c. Butter (again I use salted)
1tsp. Vanilla (again PURE vanilla extract)
1-2 Tbsp Heavy whipping cream (more or less depending on desired consistency)

You can also add 1/2tsp-1tsp of other flavored extracts! For this cake in particular I used raspberry! Pairs very well with vanilla..

DIY shade for my chickens

My yard is supper sunny.. I have a couple of bushes for The Ladies to cool off under, But I decided to make something for them today.
A couple months ago my Husband took out our old fence to be able to put up a new one. We have all the wood from it still (Slowly its getting burnt in the fire pit) I was checking it out earlier and thought to myself “That is a lot of wood.. I can re-purpose it..”
This is what I came up with…

Old fence + Spray paint + an idea = A CHICKEN CLUB HOUSE!!

Here is a close up!

Three Ingredient Blueberry Jam

I know I’ve said it a few times before, but i absolutely HATE pectin!!! I only use fresh lemon juice to bind my jams, it’s wonderful!

The family and I went blueberry picking a few days ago, late in the evening since it is so hot here now!! 90*+ is NOT my ideal weather. Any who… We ended up with about 11 pounds of blueberries!

All the recipes I’ve found online are loaded with sugar and use pectin. Ugh. Trail and Error it is.
Can you imagine using 6 or more cups of sugar for one mason jar of jam?! People are nuts!

10c. Blueberries
2c. Sugar
1/4c. Fresh lemon juice

That’s it! I could hardly believe it was so easy! And delicious!!

I put all 10C of berries in my heavy bottom pot to heat them up, once they starting bursting, I transferred them to my blender to make sure all the berries were busted. (You can use a food processor, it would probably be easier, I just dont have one… yet!)
Once I put it back into the pot I added the sugar and lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Constantly stirring, so it doesn’t burn, allow to boil for about 30 minutes.
This can get tiring. It’s totally worth it!
Remove from heat, ladle into a mason jar and VOILA!
Yields about 3C. I know, I know… after 10C of berries I thought there would be more too. But its so damned delicious all that doesn’t matter!!

blueberry jam

While the jam was still hot, I made biscuits…

I found this cute little heart shaped bowl on clearance at the World Market when we first bought the house. I think I only paid $2 for it! So I grabbed a few ❤

Pretty Ladies I

Just gonna take a second to show off how beautiful my ladies are for a minute. Its just a few of them, the other 2 were off looking for bugs!

This is Betty, one of my Easter Eggers. She is a “mut” breed. It’s OK though because she will lay colorful eggs for us!

Humalie, the Buff Orpington. She is the one that I think has started laying for me. 2 eggs in 3 days so far! She the calmest most docile hen in our flock. I ❤ her!

Betty and Louise. The EEs. They are known in the chicken world as the “slow ones.” At first I couldn’t understand why someone would say that… but it’s true. Makes me nervous about coop training and waterer training for them. They are very sweet, they love each other. If I’m holding one the other will fly up into my lap, just to be close.

The bunny Nathan decided he was going to push Humalie over and eat her cracked corn! She should’ve stuck up for herself, but she is a sharer!

❤ I love my Ladies!

OK so I know I posted this morning about waiting on eggs… TODAY I FOUND MY FIRST ONE IN THE COOP!!!
I definitely did the egg dance! Ha!

first egg!! 7.4.14

It’s perfect! No blemishes, no soft spots. Just light brown speckledy goodness! My mom blew it out for me (into a frying pan) and I get to keep the shell!
